Turkmenistan’s energy sector enters a new phase of development
Turkmenistan’s energy sector is entering a new phase of development amid the implementation of major gas production projects, geological exploration in the Caspian Sea, the development of regional infrastructure, and technological advancements. This is stated in an article by Steve Travers, regional director of the international energy consulting company «GaffneyCline», published by the «Turkmen Energy Forum». According to the company’s assessment, the international energy sector’s focus is increasingly shifting from the sheer scale of Turkmenistan’s natural resource potential to practical areas—project implementation, infrastructure development, expanding market access, and building long-term cooperation. Further development of the «Galkynyş» gas field is cited as one of the key conditions for this new phase. The start of its fourth phase involves drilling new production wells and building gas processing infrastructure to increase commercial gas production. Another area highlighted in the article is geological exploration in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea. According to the company, appraisal and production well A8 at «Magtymguly» field within Block 1 demonstrated significant potential during testing. New promising sites in the region continue to be explored through geological and seismic surveys. The article devotes special attention to the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) gas pipeline, with a design capacity of up to 33 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which is intended to connect Turkmenistan’s gas reserves with the growing markets of South Asia. «GaffneyCline» emphasizes the importance of balanced development of the resource base and infrastructure: the development of «Galkynyş» increases production capacity, while Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) gas pipeline opens up access to regional markets. According to the company’s assessment, the development of gas reserves, geological exploration in the Caspian Sea, the expansion of infrastructure capabilities, and technological improvements at existing fields are creating new opportunities for international operators, engineering and service companies, technology developers, and consulting firms. «GaffneyCline» is a technical partner of the Turkmen Energy Forum and one of the co-organizers of the 31st International Conference and Exhibition «Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan-2026», which will take place in Ashgabat on October 21–23, 2026. The article notes that the next stage of development for Turkmenistan’s energy sector will be determined not only by the scale of its natural resource base, but also by the effectiveness of project implementation, the use of modern technologies, and the strength of international cooperation.
